There is only one true species of a Venus Fly Trap, which is commonly known as Dionaea mussa, however there many other variations. These cultivars all differ in color and size. Among these carnivorous plants there is a good variety. One of these is Dionaea Green Dragonfly and Red Dragonfly.
They look very much alike, and they do tend to attract the same kind of insects. However, there is an important difference in the care that needs to be implemented for both plants. For starters, it is absolutely essential to provide good plant nutrition. This means you must ensure your soil has good quality calcium, magnesium, sulphur and potassium. This is critical to the health and growth of both Venus fly traps and carnivorous plants.
For both these plants you should try to let them grow in full sun as long as possible. For this you should strive to plant the seedlings in pots in the outdoors. This will help them get the maximum sunlight as possible. You should however take care to keep the seedlings well watered during dry periods.
For both the trap plants and the insects you should provide a good and healthy diet. This means that you should provide plenty of high quality proteins, carbohydrates and vegetables. You should also avoid feeding your carnivorous plants leaves that have been cooked. These leaves contain too many digestive enzymes that can damage your plants and possibly kill them.
If you plant your seedlings in pots, they will need to have their root systems deepened slightly. In the wild when plants have their roots sown, they have their rhizomes exposed. Plants that are kept in pots generally have their roots sown at the base of the plant which means the rhizome of the plant is exposed when the plant grows in the pot.
To speed up the process of growth you should provide a quality potting soil. When purchasing a new pot for your carnivorous plants, look for one that is well-drained. The soil should be slightly loamy so it retains sufficient water. It is also important to keep the soil damp but not wet. If the soil is too wet the rhizomes of the plants could be damaged.
Both the carnivorous and non-carnivorous plants require a significant amount of nutrition to grow. Aphids and spider mites especially love to feed on the leaves of the plant, so you should regularly feed the plants with either fresh blood worms or dried blood worms. To improve the texture of the soil, mixing in a compost or garden fertilizer is recommended.
The main problem with these plants is that they are not very suitable for areas where there is little natural sunlight. The lack of sunlight makes it difficult for the plants to absorb the nutrients they need from the soil. This is a problem especially when the plants are placed in areas where they face an obstructed view of any type of sunlight. If you do choose to put these carnivorous plants in a shady area, it is important to place the container on top of some rocks or large pebbles so the sunlight will hit the foliage first.
Plants placed in full sun will normally grow much faster than plants placed in low light. They will also have a higher rate of growth as well as a tendency to mature earlier. This is due to the fact that the plants receive more sunlight and so enjoy a rapid growth phase. However, placing your Venus fly traps in full sun will mean you will need to water your indoor plant more frequently. If you do place your Venus fly traps in full sun, be sure to water the plants daily during the hottest part of the day.
There are some additional considerations to keep in mind if you wish to grow plants indoors. Make sure that the growing area receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. If the growing area does not receive enough sunlight, the plants will tend to grow too fast and too tall, reducing their attractiveness to insects.
Your carnivorous plants will also need a reasonable amount of moisture. A regular misting with a garden hose should be sufficient, although it is important to use water that is room temperature. In addition, be sure to keep the humidity of the environment where your carnivorous plants are growing at an acceptable level. You can achieve this by regularly spraying water on the leaves of the plants and spraying plant pots with a water-based plant fertilizer.
